Ready, Set, Go!5

I used to be an athlete. Is that even possible? Can that be totally in your past or is it one of those things, once and athlete always an athlete? Not that that matters, but anyway…I used to be an athlete. I played basketball from the time I could carry a ball until my senior year in high school. Somewhere along the way I picked up tennis and I’d add a little softball in there every now and then. Not often, though. A tennis ball coming at you 50 miles an hour was going to hurt a lot less than a softball. Just sayin’.
I loved everything about the sports…except the first week of practice. After that first week my muscles had toned up a bit, my lungs had gotten back into shape of breathing hard and I could run like the wind. Okay. I could never run like the wind, but I could run better than I could have the week before!
All during that first week, though, I was miserable. I always, always threw up on the first day. After that I was done with that stuff and moved on to bigger and better challenges of trying to get my tight muscles to even move so I could get out of bed. You would have thought the second day would’ve been better on my poor muscles, but it was worse. Gradually, though, as the weeks progressed, I was able to move without pain. I got a little quicker, and better able to serve my team in the ways that they needed me to on the court.
Last week I decided to get back on my stationary bike after a 3-4 month hiatus. It was painful. Not only were my legs sore, but sitting was painful for a few days. I mean, those tiny little seats they put on those things aren’t made for most people, and when you’ve got that shoved in your backside for around 30 minutes a day, it’s gonna take a little time to get used to. I’d been doing pretty good, too. Most days I would get up and ride before work so I would have some time to work on homework after work.
Tonight, however, was the exception. I hadn’t gotten much sleep last weekend, so I decided to take the morning off. Then when I got home this evening, I was tired. The last thing I wanted to do was get on that bike and ride for 30 minutes. I texted a friend and told her just that. She very nicely told me to suck it up. I still tried to find something else to do, but in the back of my head I kept hearing what I didn’t want to hear.
“If you don’t get on there tonight, it will be that much easier to forget about it again tomorrow morning and then tomorrow evening. Then you’re gonna have to get back on at some point and start the whole sore muscle process all over again. Suck it up.”
46.5 minutes, 12.31 miles and 580 calories burned later, I texted my friend and told her I’d done it. I got stubborn. I usually only ride for 30 minutes, but I wanted to finish out a preset program on the bike, so I just kept spinning. You know what? I feel awesome. Yeah, my legs are a little tired, but I feel awesome.
Tonight I’m going to sleep well, and tomorrow I’m going to get up early again and get at it one more time. See, whether you’re like me and have a goal weight in mind, or if you’re trying to start a business, find a job or just get to know who you are, you’ve got to start somewhere. People who never try fail every time.

What struck me tonight is a quote that got me right in the gut. “Lazy is a lie. Lazy is a label not created by God. He created you to be courageous. Now go out & prove it to yourself!”
God created us for great things. He created us to be able to brighten someone’s day with a smile. He created us to be smart enough to figure out how to get clean water to people in need. He created us to love and to love fully. It’s what it’s all about, folks. So here’s the deal. “What are you waiting for? What do you have to lose? Your insecurities, they try to hold to you. But you know that you’re made for more, so don’t be afraid to move. If faith it all it takes, then you can walk on the water, too.”
Get out. Move. Get started. What are you waiting for? It’s time to start walking on the water.
