Run, Run, Run

Well, this is it.  Tomorrow is the big day.  Tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. I will be beginning my first ever 5K run.  Hopefully I’ll be done by 7:00.

You think I’m kidding, don’t you?

Anyway, there are quite a few thoughts going around in my head right now.  Mainly, What the hell was I thinking?  But besides that there are a couple more that I’d like to make mention of here.

I’m kind of excited.  I’ve never done this before.  It’s something new.  It was on my birthday list, and I’m getting it done.  I think that’s kind of neat.

I’m a little nervous.  I’ve been having a few problems with my calves and shins and basically just anything below my knee but above my ankle.  I’m hoping they won’t cause me too much pain and tighten up so I have to start walking.  I am also nervous I’ll forget to go to the bathroom before the race starts.  Yes.  I think of things like that.

I’m actually a little focused, which is amazing in and of itself.  I will not quit running.  I’ll have my earbuds in with Eminem, P!nk, TobyMac and others flowing through the space between my ears.

I think the thing, though, I feel the most is this sense of accomplishment.  Even before I’ve started the race, I’ve won.  I’ve been training for 12 weeks.  I don’t stick with much of anything for that length of time.  I thought at the beginning there was no way I’d make it 3.1 miles.  For the last three weeks, I’ve run a 5k in my morning run either on Friday or Saturday.  Yeah.  I can’t believe it either.

It’s not about winning.  I can tell you beyond the shadow of a doubt that I will not win.  And as competitive as I am, I’m totally okay with that.  Right now, at this point in my life, to finish is to win.  I’ve left a lot of things unfinished.  I’ve got half-finished projects all over my house just begging me to come back and seal the deal.  I need to finish this race.  So I’m going to finish this race.

So for those of you who have stuck around with me during this training time or who have actually joined me in training, thanks.  Maybe tomorrow you’ll run a 5k in your workout or at least think of me running mine. Let’s rock this.

What are you training for, whether it’s a race or something totally different?

Good luck, Julie!! You will do just fine and will make yourself proud. Have fun!!

I am training to be a nurse… something I thought about doing 13 years ago, then started 8 years ago (but didn’t finish). So now I’m picking it back up and will need another couple of years still. Sometimes those projects take longer to finish than you originally anticipate – the sticking with it is often the hardest part.

So – your 5k is down hill from here! 😀

    • Thank you, Anna! Good luck to you with your nurse training. I can totally see you excelling at it! I’ll let you all know how it goes Friday!!!

  • You’ll do great! I was just glad I finished my first 5K. That one was for me, now I run for others. I suppose you could say I’m training my diet right now. I’m on my way to being at least 15 lbs lighter.

    • Awesome! Way to go, Bethany! I think that will be my next goal. You’ve just inspired me 🙂
