10 Things I Spy

I’m having a little trouble coming up with a topic for today’s post.  I don’t know if it’s that I just need to take a day to rest or what, but my mind is not completely working right now.

So here’s the deal.  I want you to look around the room that you’re in right now and list 10 things that you see.  Don’t get up and walk around.  Just stay where you’re at and let me know what you’re seeing.

I’ll go first:

1.  My computer.  It’s a Toshiba laptop.  Probably my last PC.  My next will be a Mac.

2.  A picture of me and the other bridesmaids and the beautiful bride at my friend Cathy’s wedding.

3.  Chuck Seasons 1-3 on Blu-ray.

4.  A picture on my wall that says: “I have been driven many times upon my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. ~ Abraham Lincoln”

5.  Nintendo Wii and games.

6.  Gilmore Girls Season 1.  That reminds me I need to finish watching that and get it back to Bethany.  :)

7.  My Bible.  I try to keep it pretty close at all times, but especially when I’m sitting here writing.  You never know when a verse is going to pop into your head that would fit perfectly in a post.

8.  I think I have four or five cups sitting around here that I just need to pick up and take to the sink.  Maybe tomorrow.

9.  My feet.  They’re propped up in front of me.  I’m relaxing.

10.  My bookcase which holds all my favorites.  I only keep physical copies of books by my favorite authors since I have my Kindle, so that means books by Jane Austen, Terri Blackstock and Dee Henderson to name a few.  Still between the three there are quite a few books in there.  I’ll have to see what else I’ve got.  Saturday might be a good day to go for a run and read.

So I’m assuming that we’re all adults here, so I’m just going to ask you what you’re asking for for Christmas.  I’ll start:

So there’s my list.  I’m not going to get all melodramatic on you and tell you I’m wishing for peace on earth and goodwill toward men.  I think that should be an everyday wish not just at Christmas.  So now I’m asking you:

Getting Lost

We took the youth group today to the mall in Evansville for a scavenger hunt.  There were several of us adults that the kids were supposed to find.  The goal for the kids was to walk around the mall and get all of our signatures and meet back in the food court at a certain time.  Our job was to not let the kids find us.

At first I was going to dress up crazy, but the more I thought about it, the more I didn’t want to.  For one, I didn’t really want to walk around the mall looking like an idiot.  Secondly, I decided that the best way to avoid being seen was to blend in.  So I walked around the mall for an hour and a half and was only caught twice by the teams, which I consider pretty good because I saw most of them throughout that time walking around and looking.

I think everyone had a good time.  I even got a little bit of shopping done.  And while I don’t think there was intended to be any sort of object lesson from the whole day, I’m always  looking for something to write about, so I found one.

It’s so easy to get lost when we blend in.

Most of us try not to stand out too much most of the time.  We can usually blend into the background.  No one will notice because we’re careful not to let them.  You won’t do anything ridiculous because what if I think you’re a little weird?  We’ve worked hard to fit in.  We don’t really want to be any different because then that means that sometimes we’re going to be alone.  And sometimes when we’re alone, we’d really rather be hanging out with some friends who don’t really get us.  They only get who we’ve pretended to be so we don’t stand out.

And then there are times when our souls just long to be heard, but since we’ve worked so hard trying to be what everyone else thinks that we should be, we’ve kind of lost our voices.

We all just need to be seen sometimes.

And I think the only reason we’re not being seen is because we’re not doing anything to stand out.  Now, I don’t think we should all walk around in the mall dressed up like a leprechaun or anything like that.  But I do think that we should try to be completely who we are.  I believe that God has created us all to be different.

And those differences make us beautiful.

But to know how we’re different, we have to know who we are in Christ.

We are fearfully and wonderfully made.  Each fiber and gene created to specifically who we are.

10 Things I Did This Week

Real original title.  I know.  There’s been a lot going on, but other than that, it’s been a great week.  Here are just a few things I’ve been involved in this week.

1.  I got to work Monday and the computer wouldn’t turn on.  Not just the Internet was down.  The whole computer wouldn’t turn on.  No power source.  My job relies heavily on the use of a computer, so I had to get creative to find stuff to do.  My desk was actually clean for a while.

2.  I applied for financing to buy a new car.  I got approved for 0% financing.  For those of you who know my story and how I’ve fought with debt over the last ten years, then you know how big of a deal this is.  I just about started crying.

3.  I started negotiations on a car.  We’re not together on price yet, and I don’t know if we’ll get there or not.  I don’t have to buy a car yet.  I think I’ll wait it out a little.  I’ve just decided I absolutely will not finance over a certain amount, and we’re just not there yet.  They’re gonna want the ’11s off the lot sometime soon, right?

4.  Wednesday my computer got fixed.  That’s when my desk got messy again.  I think the computer makes me less organized.  It makes it possible for me to do more things at once, so I’m less organized and less focused.  Maybe not such a great thing.

5.  Tuesday Bridget weighed and measured me at bootcamp mainly because we were both too excited to wait much longer.  It was a good day.

6.  Thursday I announced the results from the measurements on Run With The Big Girls, my other blog.  Be sure to head over there and check it out.  Tomorrow I’ll be posting some more before and after pictures on there if I can get my hands on some.

7.  I got most of my Christmas shopping done.  I’m heading out to do some shopping over the weekend, so that should finish me up!  I’m so glad.  Now I’ve just got to start wrapping.

8.  I put a new theme up here on the ‘old blog.  I’ve got a guy working on a logo for this one and the other.  Hopefully soon, I’ll be able to add some color.  But for now, this is how we’re gonna roll.

9.  Somehow I recovered from last week’s workouts.  As of Saturday, I didn’t really think I would, but by the time Tuesday rolled around I was ready to go!

10.  Got to tell my mom happy birthday yesterday on her 55th birthday.  I thank God every day that I have her and my dad in my life!  Love you guys!

Don’t Forget To Breathe

There is a certain mood that comes around every now and then.  It’s usually hanging over our heads when there’s a big decision to be made.

Some may call it contemplative.  Some may call it melancholy.

I just call it tension.

Do you ever feel like that one decision is either going to make or break you?  But then agin you know it’s not?

The decision on whether or not to buy a house or rent.  And then if you do decide to buy, which one do you buy?  How much can you afford?  How many bedrooms?  Whether or not to buy a new car or keep the old one.  And then if you do get a new car, do you buy new or used?  Do you go for something big enough to haul people around or just big enough for two?

And then let’s say you do decide to buy a new house and a new car and your family situation expands.  Let’s say you get married or have a kid or ten.  What if the decision you made on the house turns out to be the wrong one?  What if you need something bigger now?  What if you need something smaller?  What if you lose your job and can’t pay for any of it?

What if you sit paralyzed in fear and never do anything?

What if I start spiraling downward again and start making all the bad decisions over and over again of my past?

What if I screw up one more time?

We play the game of What If too often in our lives.  We get so scared of doing something wrong that we just sit and do nothing at all.  And because of that life just seems to pass us by.

We miss so much life out there.

We’re too busy sweating out every decision that we forget to be present.  We’re selling out to something, whether it be work or fun or things that we want or trying to decide how best to live our lives.

We need to live.  And some days are going to be good, and some days are going to be bad.  We need to make decisions. They’re all going to change our lives in different ways.  We just have to remember that God will guide us through whatever happens.

If we make a good decision, He is there.

If we make a bad decision, He is there.

Some things may take more work to walk through, but He will walk there beside us every single step of the way.

So get out there and start moving.

Start deciding.

Start living.

What Love Is

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.  If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?  Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.  1 John 3:16-18

 

We’ve got a convoluted sense of the word “love,” don’t we?

Think about it.  How many times a day do we say that we love something?

And quite honestly when we say we love something, it’s not really that we’re willing to lay down our lives for a piece of pizza that we love.

We use “love” hundreds of times for completely trivial things, but for the things that we truly love, I mean really love, we can hardly mutter the words.

I was sitting with a group of people last night, and as I was just looking around the room listening in on the conversations it just hit me.  Man, I love these people.  And we actually get to walk through this thing called life together.  How cool is that?

These are people who are wanting to make a change in their lives and in turn make a difference in the world around them.

…Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

I was just struck realizing how incredibly lucky I am to have a chance to get to know these people I call my friends.

How often do you think you say the word “love” in referring to something that is trivial?  Why do you think it’s so hard to tell people we love them?

10 Christmas Songs I Love

I love good Christmas music.  So I’ve decided to make a list of some of my favorite Christmas songs.  Some of the videos aren’t that great, but they’re the best I could find.  Here they are in no particular order.  Hope you enjoy!

1.  Chris Tomlin – Glory In The Highest  ~ I love every song on this CD, but O Come All Ye Faithful and Glory In The Highest are probably my two favorites.  This video is an advertisement but includes some sampling.  Enjoy!

2.  Mariah Carey – All I Want For Christmas Is You ~ I may be 100% alone on this, but this song just makes me smile and tap my toes.

3.  She & Him – I’ll Be Home For Christmas ~ I can’t get enough of this group.  Very mellow and soft sounds.  You should buy the album.  It feels like you’re back a couple decades while listening.

4.  Andy Williams – It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year ~ I grew up on this version of this song.  Nothing brings back memories like hearing the songs you grew up with!

5. Johnny Mathis – Sleigh Ride ~ Another version I grew up with.  Although, on this one there have been several recen versions that I like very well!

6. O Holy Night – There are so many incredible versions of this song.  I just wanted to share with you one of my favorites from one of my favorite people.  This is my friend, Katie Gruen, singing it for us!

7.  John Lennon – Happy Xmas (War is Over) ~ I love this song.  I don’t think it will ever get old.

8.  Elvis Presley – Blue Christmas ~ No one sings it like Elvis.  But this video is a little creepy ’cause Martina just walks right in there!  I just had to share :)

9.  The Chipmunks – Christmas Don’t Be Late ~ It can’t be Christmas until I hear this at least 20 times…they just keep playing it!  Anyway, good memories attached to this one!

10.  Baby It’s Cold Outside – I actually like the Dean Martin version best, but the Zooey Deschanel/Will Ferrell version is pretty good.  And I think this is one of the best Christmas movies of all time.

Confession #193,293:

I can be a spoiled and entitled little brat.

I like for things to go my way. I like for a little order in my life, even though my desk is a complete mess most of the time. I like for things to be clear and concise when I’m trying to get something done.

I want it my way and I want it now.

I get a little pissy when it doesn’t happen like I think it should.

One of the many problems with this kind of attitude is that I start to make it more about me than the person I’m serving. I guess with this kind of attitude, I’m making it all about me.

And while there are times that there are actual legitimate concerns, I think most of the time it’s just because things don’t go the way I’d envisioned. I want to have my hands in a little bit of everything, and quite honestly, they just don’t need to be there.

We all have strengths. We all have weaknesses. We need to hone our strengths and to strengthen our weaknesses. The trick is to know the time and the place to be doing those things. It’s hard to know. That’s why I called it a trick.

Building a house is not the time to learn how to hammer a nail. Building a birdhouse? I’d say that’s a little more feasible. Catering a meal for 500 people is not the time to learn how to cook. But making dinner for my friends? Go for it.

If you’re in leadership, take care of business. Show compassion, and show organization. If you’re completely unorganized, get someone to help you. Good leaders ask for help.

If you’re not in some sort of leadership, do whatever you’re doing well. Seriously, give it all you’ve got. We’re commanded to.

“Concentrate on doing your best for God, work you won’t be ashamed of, laying out the truth plain and simple.” 2 Timothy 2:15

Do work you won’t be ashamed of.

I ran into a situation this week where I had failed to do something properly. It was unintentional, but still wrong. I was embarrassed, angry and completely frustrated with myself. There really wasn’t an excuse. I just didn’t do it right.

Do work you won’t be ashamed of.

Whether you’re leading a group of thousands or working in a cubicle with thousands, do it well.

Because when we do the little things well, then those big things seem so much easier to handle. The little decisions made well make the big decisions easier.

So Monday I was a little pouty. I was angry with myself. If you would have met me in the midst of it all, I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have liked me.

Do things right.

Do things well.

And in all things God will be glorified.

Blech Friday

So I wrote for the Friday 10 Things post that I had went to Target for the Doorbuster event at midnight.  And while all in all it was a pleasant experience, I will probably never go again.  The truth is, I went because a friend asked me, but I was very curious about all the stories I’ve heard over the years, and the thought of never having experienced these stories on my own seemed like a waste.

So I went.

The people watching was amazing.

I saw people who had spent the better part of their Thanksgiving day standing in line to save a few hundred dollars.  There were people who were the eternal optimists, like us, who thought that getting there a mere three hours early would be plenty of time.  And then there were those who sat in their cars until about 5 till midnight in hopes of jumping the line to get a good deal.

There it was.  The good, the bad and the ugly all in one place.

The commercialism of the holidays kind of makes me sick.  I love it and I hate it.  I love it because I get to scope out the big deals and be a smart consumer, but I hate it because it kind of consumes me.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love a good deal as much as the next person, but enough to get angry over it?  Absolutely not.

When did we get such a sense of entitlement?

When did Thanksgiving become about finding the best deals we can and beating everyone to them instead of being with family and being thankful for what we have?

I’m also not saying it’s all bad.  There were more friendly than unfriendly people out that night.  I think for some it has become a tradition and bonding time that they have with their family.  And I’m all for that.  Find common ground.  Be with the people you love.  Go out and have a good time.  Honestly, I see no problem with it.

But my warning is is that if finding a deal ever becomes more important to you than eating dinner with your family or playing games with your kids, then in my opinion it’s time to rethink just about everything.

10 Thoughts From My First Doorbuster Experience

My “friend” called me last night to see if I wanted to go to Target with her in hopes of getting a cheap television.  I said yes.  I don’t know why.  This was my first Black Friday experience.  I thought I’d share a few thoughts.

1.  These two were suckers with me.  My sister-in-law is on the left and my friend who invited us on the right.  We stood in line for three hours before the doors opened. This was about hour 2 1/2 in line.
2.  We got there at 9 p.m. when the doors didn’t open until midnight.  We would have had to get there at 5 p.m. in order to get the TV.

3.  Experienced Black Friday shoppers have it down to an art.  So do the Black Friday line jumpers.  Two girls got right in front of me as we were almost to the door and I didn’t notice it until we were almost walking in.  I have no idea how it happened.

4.  The lady behind us called for a manager on someone who was trying to cut in line at the checkout after we had stood in line for an hour and a half.  The cutter’s excuse?  They just now started wrapping around the line.  She was in front when everyone else started to wrap through the girls’ department.  She was being the only reasonable person.  If she had cut in front of me after an hour and a half, I probably would have become pretty unreasonable especially at 2:30 a.m.

5.  Other than that most everyone was pleasant and just having a good time.  It was just hard to move anywhere.

6.  I think we all decided that that would be our last Black Friday experience.  I’m just not cut out for late nights anymore.

7.  I crawled in bed at almost 4 a.m. because it was an hour’s drive home, and I just crawled out of bed a few minutes ago…at noon.  And I have a headache.

8.  My favorite purchase of the night?  Catchphrase for $15.  I think I can probably get it at that price just about any time, but since I went, I felt like I should probably buy something and Catchphrase is always a good purchase.

9. I also got some cheap movies, including a season of Bones for $12.99.  Unfortunately, those movies will probably be there if I were to go back to Evansville in a few hours.  I’m not planning on it, however.  I’ll just assume that’s the case.

10.  Standing in line outside a store is not my idea of Thanksgiving.  I’d rather be standing in line waiting for the pecan pie or debating with my brothers or playing pinochle.  And while we did have a good time, cold and all, I just think that online Black Friday shopping will be the only way I’ll do it from now on.
